Ardis’s speed proved to be nothing less than astounding. They rode well into the night, and Kate, feeling confident that they would reach Caprah before sunset tomorrow, risked a few hours’ rest.

It would still be many miles before they reached any trees, so she moved off the road a short distance, removed her bedroll from her saddle, and spread it out on the ground. After a cold dinner, she lay back against Ardis, who settled down next to her bond-mate. The steady rise and fall of her breathing and her warmth were all the comfort Kate needed.

Stars twinkled like familiar diamonds in a foreign sky. A sliver of moon shone in the north, yet a full moon shone just overhead. Kate puzzled on the balance between Earth and Eritide and wondered exactly how two moons factored into the equation. She should sleep, but there was simply too much to consider, and this was the first chance she had both the energy and the time to do so. All her questions bubbled to the surface. How is Dad? Where on earth could Kazuki have gone? Does Bolthorn follow close behind? She remembered his unbridled hatred and Mulga’s words. Goosebumps prickled down her arms at the thought of meeting him on this deserted plain.

Before long, she regretted ever affording herself the luxury of contemplation. It had left a pit in her stomach stuffed full of reservations. The only conclusion she had come to, and it was probably just poorly disguised hope, was that Bolthorn not popping up over the last two days meant she could check him off her list of things to worry about—for now. Everything else remained unanswered and weighed on her chest like an anvil.

Ardis shook her head and snorted, blowing Kate’s hair into her face. That was just enough to bring her back from the precipice of a downward spiral. Ardis told her not to worry and to get some sleep because no matter what happened, they were in it together.

The Dari even took watch. Kate figured a horse was a better sentry than most. Detecting and fleeing from predators was hard-wired into their nature, and Ardis was a thousand times more sensitive than a common horse. A vulture didn’t have a chance of sneaking up on them tonight.

Kate gave her bond-mate an unspoken thank you and slipped into a deep sleep, a sleep that once again lacked the usual nightmares. No nightmares and no obsessive thoughts about her mother. She had finally let go. The anger, resentment, and grief had gone, leaving room for concern and affection for her father, a double-edged sword that hadn’t left her gut since she arrived in Eritide.

They rose and were on their way before the stars faded. As the day revealed itself, clouds moved in, turning the golden glory of the rising sun into little more than a pallid disk by noontime. Kate figured she couldn’t really complain if it rained. Since she had arrived, the weather had been ideal for fall.
